| Designer Comments: The new Elementary School replaces a 40 year old facility on an 8 acre urban site. The limited site necessitated the design of a two-story facility to allow adequate area for playgrounds and parking. The new building is an "L" shaped design that effectively segregates classrooms by age level. Pre-Kindergarden, kindergarden, and first grade classrooms are on the lower level with upper grades on the second level. The administrative suite, playroom, cafeteria and media center all flank a central "street" which has overlooks from the second floor above. Natural light is brought in from high clerestory windows and give an "atrium-like" feeling to both levels. Exterior materials and massing express the various funcitions of the design. The "L" shaped design creates an enclosure for the playground and brings an effective economy and simplicity to the project. |
