| Designer Comments: The Elementary School is a 72,000 sf, K-5 school that opened its doors to students in the fall of 1998. The school is a reuse of an elementary school originally designed for the School System in 1990. That elementary school was designed to accommodate 750 students. The Elementary School was modified to accommodate 600 students, but maintained the core elements of a 750 student school. The basic design planning principle is a "X" plan configuration. At the core of the building, or the intersection of the "Y', is the administration, media center, and cafeteria. There are three classroom wings, or houses, consisting of a K- I wing, 2-3 wing, and 4-5 wing. A fourth wing contains the arts programs and multipurpose room. The building is easily observable from one point at the center of the building, thus making the school a very safe and secure environment, and one that focuses on educating children. |
