| Designer Comments: The Prototypical Middle School is a 118,000 square foot, eight hundred student, state of the art middle school facility. This prototype was developed as a joint venture between two adjoining school districts, their administrators, teachers, parents and students, all of whom actively participated in the process of collaborative design. While a prototype, the plan is adaptable to particular user needs as evidenced by the three rather different customized versions of the school in existence. The Prototypical Middle School is a modular building with its wings spun at angles to one another. Each wing is constructionally simple, yet the overall composition is dynamic, leading to a vibrancy and energy befitting the activities of a middle school. There are five wings in the school, three of which are classroom wings, with each of these being connected to shared student commons spaces. The Arts, Media, Cafeteria, Gymnasium and Administration are all designed so that any qf them may be kept open for public use while the rest of the school is closed. Additionally, these spaces are sized for future expansion to twelve hundred students with easily expandable classroom wings. The building is composed of brick and split face block with low slope membrane and standing seam metal roofing. Attributes of the facility include team teaching, exterior teaching courtyards, teacher workrooms adjoining classrooms, computers in every classroom and extensive science and computer labs. |
