| Designer Comments: The design intent for the Middle School was to create as an efficient, secure, clearly organized, and flexible facility that would adapt to a variety of sites. The different grade levels are separated by "wings" all feeding off a grander corridor that organizes the vocational/art classrooms as well as the more public spaces in the building. This corridor varies in width from 12 to 20 feet depending on circulation needs, and is dramatically lit from clerestory windows of varying rhythms. Within this main corridor are bold graphic signs and playful acoustical treatments that enliven the space, reduce noise levels, and help soften the inherent institutional nature of educational facilities. The exterior materials are simply combinations of brick and concrete block with subtle variations in the materials reflecting the various internal uses of the building. The entrance tower is intentionally different in material to clarify entry, but to also anchor the outdoor courtyard that is landscaped with Japanese maples and a floral combination of perennials and annuals, again softening the institutional nature of large schools. An excellent plan can lend itself to a variety of interior and exterior qualities. If re-used the exterior and interior qualities can easily be modified to create distinct character, yet the efficiency, severity, and clarity of the plan prototype can be maintained. |
