| Designer Comments: The High School is a 233,000 sf facility that accommodates 1,600 students, grades 9 through 12. The school is designed all under one roof, on one floor level. This enhances the safety and security of the school by avoiding stairwells and the need to have students leave the school to circulate to other buildings. The school is designed into several distinct areas. At the center of the school is the administration, guidance, and media center so these commonly used spaces are equally accessible to all students and staff. There are four academic wings - one for science, one for math and technology labs, one for language arts, and one for social sciences and business education. At one end of the building is the gymnasium, and the other the auditorium, fine arts, and cafeteria. These two areas are designed in a way that they can be secured form the rest of the school for use during evening, weekend, and community activities. The school is currently being site adapted by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to be located on two new sites, with both schools to be opened by the fall of 2001. |
