| Designer Comments: Careful planning for the new 700-student y Elementary School adds up to a very economical solution to the districts growing population needs. The school was bid at $86.19 per square foot including all sitework and building costs in 2004. The design employs a pre-engineered structural system to reduce construction costs and the floor plan is organized to avoid specialized construction situations. With minimal long-term maintenance in mind, the exterior features brick veneer and standing seam metal roofing. Inside, the corridors have terrazzo floors and concrete masonry walls. Internal corridors connect all spaces with doors strategically located for security and control of after-school hour activities. One wing contains the kitchen/cafeteria and a 700-seat gymnasium with nearby parking, which allows for controlled public use for special events. The school consists of 31 regular classrooms, as well as a science classroom, computer lab, media center, music room, and an art classroom. The pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade classrooms have doors and windows that open directly to the exterior. The one-story scheme blends well into the rural landscape and is surrounded by trees, pastureland, and nearby farms. |
