| Designer Comments: Through a series of community forums, the county school system generated this prototype high school. A group of 68 community leaders, board members, administrators, teachers and students particpated in several consensus-building programming workshops to develop the educational specifications for the school. Out of this process came planning and building concepts that reflected the needs of all particpating groups. Once the concepts were developed, our firm worked with the individual groups to design their space within the building. This process resulted in consensus among all groups and a strong, cohesive building concept. Functional areas/academic houses are arranged around a central space. This two-story, naturally lighted atrium serves as the student commons, as well as the lobby of the auditorium, gymnasium and cafeteria. In addition, all academic houses, administration, and guidance areas are accessible from this space. The idea was to develop a sense of equality in all school functions: academics, cu.,tural arts, vocational education, physical education, administration, and guidance. |
