Designer and Owner Comments:
Designer Comments:  The prototype was designed for construction in a one, two or three story configuration for student populations ranging from 700 students to 1,000 students. The design concept features two distinct buildings, a 1-story building containing core functions along with the primary grade classrooms and a 2-story building containing the grade 2-5 classrooms. The plan configuration is understandable for young students, easy to navigate and way finding for the students is logical. The core area of the building is divided in four quadrants organized on a wide clerestory lit entry commons. The common acts as an organizing and lobby space for the Administration, Cafeteria and Multi-purpose Room. The Common can be closed off from the remainder of the school for after hours activities and provides a central orientation area for the core spaces of the school. The main entry features a secure entry vestibule used for routing of visitors & parents through the Administration Reception area once the school day has begun. The entry to the classroom building is a wide hall between the Media Center and the Administration. The Media Center and Arts spaces are located closest to the classrooms for easy transition of young students. Media Center is a high bay space with clerestory windows to bring daylight into the space. All classrooms have large exterior windows for daylight harvesting. The design of classroom building is simple and repeated on two floors. All classrooms are the same size and the rooms on each floor are configured identically, allowing for flexibility of grade level configuration as populations shift. All classrooms are paired and feature a shared teacher support space. This prototype was constructed using a steel frame for the two-story classroom wing and load-bearing masonry for core building and vertical circulation enclosures. Exterior building finishes are two color brick veneer for majority of building and insulated metal panels on the upper portion of gymnasium & media center. The roof is a low slope PVC. All interior walls are masonry with the exception of the classroom demising walls and the walls of the Administration suite.
