| Designer and Owner Comments: |
| Designer Comments: The Middle School presents a challenging site with substantial area taken up by flood plain and wetlands, unavailable for construction, and a total grade change of 90 feet. Separate automobile and bus drives converge at a common intersection offering the best sightlines available for entering the highway. The automobile drive has 1,800 feet of stacking distance. Separate bus and auto drop-off canopies provide protected access to the Main Lobby. The Lobby is a 25 foot high space with daylighting for energy efficiency. Centrally located, the Lobby serves the Administration Offices, Dining Room, Gymnasium and Auditorium, and Media Center. These public use spaces can be secured from the classroom wings by means of cross-corridor doors having electromagnetic hold-opens and electric locks. The doors can be closed and locked from a single control console in the Administration office. Administrators can conveniently secure the school for after-hours public use, or quickly "lock down" the building in an emergency. These security arrangements are designed so as not to create dead-end conditions. Students may exit the classroom wings while others are prevented from entering. The building is fully sprinklered, permitting the Dining room to be open to the Main Lobby. Corridors floors are terrazzo throughout. The Middle School offers a friendly and inviting feeling for students and public use, while maintaining a high level of security and safety. |
