Designer and Owner Comments:
Designer Comments:  The approach to this Elementary School is enhanced by a large drop-off canopy with a standing seam metal roof serving separate automobile and bus parking areas, The Main Lobby provides immediate access to Administrative offices, Cafeteria and Gymnasium, allowing for after-hours public use. The Gymnasium includes an elevated stage and divider curtain for multiple use. The Media Center is centrally located and easily accessed from the classroom wings and Administrative offices. Avery's Creek Elementary School was bid under the name of South Buncombe Elemetary School in June of 1994. In May of 1995 the Office of School Planning issued a comparison of "Costs of Recent School Projects" for projects bid from December, 1992 through January, 1995. Of the 38 projects listed this school had the second lowest cost per square foot.
Owner Comments: The County Schools has for many years used economical split face concrete masonry units for the exterior surface of newly constructed schools. The block masonry design of this Elementary School is a very colorful and aesthetically pleasing use of this material. Energy conservation measures include due south orientation, an energy management system, and a rooftop heat reclaim system utilizing exhaust air to temper outside air used for ventilation. The rooftop system cools and heats ventilation air for classrooms. Possible improvements to the design include: Elimination of roof top equipment.
