Based upon a comprehensive study of School Facility needs across the state, the 1996 North Carolina Legislature approved a referendum for the issuance of one billion eight hundred million dollars ($1,800,000,000) in general obligation bonds for the construction of school facilities. This referendum was approved by the citizens in November of 1996. The first bonds were sold and money became available in March of 1997. This bond issue has resulted in plans for 883 school facility projects including 138 new schools and 745 addition and renovation projects. As of July 30, 1999, 680 projects have been authorized to begin drawing bond funds with a value of over one and one-half billion dollars. As of this same date, over three-fourths of a billion dollars have been disbursed to pay for facility improvements currently under design and construction. The rate of disbursement continues to increase as more and more projects get underway. Numerous prototype school designs have been funded with State Bond money. Nine of these prototype school designs are shown on this web site which are being constructed repeatedly for a total of nineteen times. Click on the photos for links to further information, and their designs. |
